Geomorfological features of the Big Creek

   Course:

  • The Big Creek rises from its spring at 786 m above sea-level.

  • The spring is in the central part of Zagrebacka Gora (the mountain above Zagreb) built of paleozoic slate rocks.

  • Downstream, the Big Creek flows through outlying housing developments and then through the city of Zagreb where its confluence is.

  • Confluence - the Creek flows into the Vrapcak stream at 109 m above sea - level.

  • The stream length is 15,5 km, and we had 3 check - up points.

POINT 1: N 45°51,346´ EO 15°56,194´

Location: the foothill of Zagrebacka Gora immediately before the first houses of the village named Gornji Luksici. All upper basin water of the Big Creek is collected up to this point and is not significantly affected by the urban factors.

Map of Zagreb where the Big Creek is, and lodgment of three points.

Some students on P1.

Geomorphological features: P1 lies in the narrow alluvial valley of steep slopes. The stream bed has been cut into the paleozoic deposits of clay slates, covered with a layer of recent clastites.

POINT 2: N 45°94,012´ EO 15°56,205´

Location: in the central part of the urban area. In between the two check – up points (P1 and P2) the Creek flows through the housing developments,

"Clean" creek.

first the rural then the urban areas, without industrial plants. The urban surroundings gradually cause modifications but there is no evidence of industrial pollution yet.

Another pichture of an "clean" creek.

Geomorphological features: P2 is in older holocene terrace of Sava river built of loose clastic sediments.

POINT 3: N 45°47,016´ EO 15°56,29´

Location: between P2 and P3 there are several huge industrial plants (pharmaceutical and electronic industries and the overhaul works for the city buses and trams). The samples indicate the industry influence on the water quality.

Students on P3.

Geomorphological features: P3 lies at the most recent holocene alluvial terrace of the Sava river immediately before the confluence of the Big Creek and the Vrapcak stream.
